If there is one question we hear more than any other, it is this: will a Ragdoll be good with my children? In most homes the answer is a happy yes. Ragdolls are known for their patience and easy-going nature, which is why so many families choose them. Like any pet, though, they do best when everyone knows how to treat them kindly.

Why Ragdolls suit family life

Ragdolls are relaxed, tolerant and affectionate. Many enjoy being carried and will happily join in family life rather than hiding away. They are also less likely to swat or scratch when handled, though no cat should be expected to put up with rough treatment.

Teaching children to be gentle

A few simple rules help children and kittens become friends:

  • Sit down to cuddle. Young children should hold the kitten while sitting on the floor, so no one gets dropped.
  • Support the back legs. Lift with one hand under the chest and the other under the bottom.
  • Let sleeping kittens lie. Kittens need a lot of sleep. Waking them for play makes them grumpy.
  • Use toys, not hands. Wand toys keep little fingers safe and teach the kitten not to bite skin.
  • Give them a safe spot. Every cat needs a high place or quiet room where they can retreat.

Ragdolls and dogs

Many Ragdolls live happily with dogs, especially calm, cat-friendly ones. Introduce them slowly. Keep your kitten in their own room for the first few days and swap bedding so they get used to each other's scent. Then let them meet with the dog on a lead. Always give the kitten an escape route, and never leave them alone together until you are sure they are comfortable.

Ragdolls and other cats

Ragdolls usually get along well with other cats. Use the same slow approach: separate rooms first, then scent swapping, then short supervised meetings that get longer over time. Feeding them on opposite sides of a closed door is a lovely way to build a positive association.

Should you get two?

Ragdolls love company. If your home is empty during the day, two kittens can keep each other entertained and content. Littermates often stay close friends for life.

The best family cats are raised around families. Daily handling, gentle play and lots of everyday noise make a confident kitten.
